Helmut in M223 is a comic artist, too, if you like Graphic Novels. His space paintings are all over the College. If you like photos, check out the Photography area in the B-building. Scott Sternbach may be the most famous one for now because the New Yorker Magazine just covered his work.

REMINDER: Friday, Dec. 9, Art-in-NY Studio Visit.

Dear students in Art-in-NY.

Just a friendly reminder that we are meeting at 9:45AM on Fri., Dec. 9th, 2011, in an Asian artist's Studio in Brooklyn. The address is: [check your email for details]. Please bring your sketchbook, drawing pencils, and a camera. She is a Japanese Folk Painting artist whom I discussed last week. I posted materials from my last lecture on the History of Japanese Painting on blackboard. More info is here.

This studio visit event was created in response to our student survey, in which students wrote they wanted a special field trip, not a "museum" that they can visit on their own. Our Asian artist can speak English but not very fluent, so I will translate if necessary.

Please take this End-of-the-Semester Survey now for the online component of this course [2-3 mins].

The class voted for "no oral presentation" for the final project, so we will have NO ORAL, but I still need your interview report. Please read the course blog for details and assignment guideline in particular.

Final Tips: I updated my blog post with the info for Pratt and Hunter Art events. Also, on Thursday, Dec. 8th, there will be various galley exhibition openings in Chelsea 6-8pm. I am probably attending Ronnie Bass at I-20 Gallery, 557 West 23rd Street, 6-8pm. If you are in Queens, the Chocolate Factory is hosting a free performance art event on Tues. Dec. 6, 2011 7PM. Artists expect you to talk to them at those events.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Wish you are having a great weekend,

NK

NEXT WEEK:
The class is meeting at 9:45AM on Friday, December 9th, 2011, in an Asian artist's Painting Studio in Brooklyn. The address is:

[please check your email for details]

The artist is in NYC with NYFA. I posted materials from my mini lecture on Japanese Folk Painting on blackboard.

This studio visit event was created in response to our mid-semester survey, in which a few students wrote they wanted a special field trip, not a "museum" where they can attend on their own.

The class voted for "no oral presentation" for the final project, so we will have NO ORAL (but I still need your interview report). Please read the course blog for details and assignments < http://art-in-newyork.blogspot.com/ >.

Please email me if you have any questions.

"Bad" Drawing

1. Create a blog post under the title: "Bad" Drawing, with four images from a sketchbook that contain four of the following five elements:

a. Deformation of the figure
b. Art resource
c. Non-art resource
d. Fantastic content
e. Irreverent content

2. Learning Objective
Students will be able to:

  • Explain "Bad" Painting, the American figurative art movement in the 1970's.
  • Organize their own artworks to create a meaning in the historical context.
  • Examine drawings from various perspectives other than technical sophistication.
  • Optimize photos of their drawings using Microsoft Paint Tool.
  • Create a blog post with texts and images on a blog in a timely manner.
Producing a blog post with meaningful contents during a two-hour lab time. Students bring in at least two images ideally in jpeg or modify them in MS Paint Tool. For the rest, they draw on the spot and scan the drawings or take a mobile photo of what they just create. It would be fun to draw "deformation of the figure," "fantastic" (as in Mermaid or Unicorn or Harry Potter) or "irreverent content" and be able to see what other students are drawing.

Room Change

Dear students in Art-in-New York,

Sorry for this last minute change, but we are meeting in E227 (our regular classroom) this Friday, Dec. 2nd because the College canceled our ePortfolio Workshop due to tech problems.

Please stay away from ePortfolio for now and update your blogs. I will see you in class.
